Prepare an IFC model for Vyer

🏢 Set up an IFC model right and Vyer turns it into a building where every room has a name and every element sits on its floor. The next version of the model then updates it without losing what people have added.

The file

  • An IFC file in version IFC2x3 or IFC4, named with the ending .ifc.

  • Exactly one building and one site in the file, with at least one floor. A file with more is refused as Validation failed.

  • Every element with its own unique id. Duplicated ids are refused too.

The floors

Every element belongs to the floor it is on. The floors in the model become the floors in Vyer, in order of height, with the model's names, or they are matched to the floors you already created when you confirm the upload. See Match the floors and confirm.

The rooms

Every room, corridor and shaft that is a space in the building is a room object in the model, named by its function and filling its area. Rooms are what Vyer shows as spaces, what areas are built from, and what work orders and assets are placed in. A room missing from the model is missing from Vyer.

Model to the level of detail you will use

Vyer is for running the building. Model floors, rooms, slabs, walls, doors and windows, plus columns, stairs, railings and ramps where the drawings show them. Installation detail adds weight to the file and nothing to the floor plan.

Send the modeler these requirements

Whoever builds or updates the model can work straight from this list:

  • Every element sits on the right floor and has the right IFC class: a wall is a wall, a door is a door.

  • The model is closed: no gap between slab and outer wall, and walls and columns meet the slab above and below.

  • No geometry overlaps.

  • Every space has a room object that fills it, named by its function.

  • The model shows the building as the available drawings describe it.

  • Elements are real Revit families, so they can be edited in bulk. Model-in-place only where there is a reason for it.

  • The model sits near Revit's internal origin, with positive X and Y coordinates only.

Updating the model later

Vyer recognizes an element by its id. When a new version of the model is uploaded:

  • An element whose id is unchanged is updated in place, and keeps the data, photos and work placed on it in Vyer.

  • An element whose id has changed or disappeared is read as removed. The data attached to the old one does not follow to the new one.

  • A room that is replaced keeps the assets placed in it, but they lose their link to the room until it is set again.

So keep ids stable between versions, and model changes as changes rather than as delete and redraw.
